WMV stands for Windows Media Video and is a series of video compression codecs that were designed for early internet video streaming and HD-DVD and Blu-Ray physical media, Video in this file format is natively playable on Windows devices and can have DRM content management attached.
MOV files were created by Apple, are associated with the application Quicktime and often times use the MPEG-4 codec for compression. They were built as a cross-platform format, meaning they can be played on many Mac and Windows applications. MOV files are one of the few container formats that support alpha channel, or transparency.
You might want to convert WMV files to MOV because MOV is supported for native playback on more devices than WMV. Also, MOV files can sometimes be handled more efficiently by video editing platforms, so if you are looking to edit WMV files, it could be useful to first convert the file format to MOV.
NOTE: It's important to distinguish between file container formats and compression formats, or codecs. For example, MP4 is a container, and can hold different types of video compression, for example, MPEG-2 Part 2, MPEG-4 AVC, or HEVC, as well as audio (again compressed in a variety of formats) and metadata (for example subtitles). Some codecs can be wrapped in multiple different containers. Containers are sometimes referred to as file extensions, e.g. MOV, MP4, or AVI, but it's important to remember that there can be different types of video within these file formats.
VideoStudio is more than WMV to MOV converter. We built VideoStudio to convert multiple file-formats including the formats below.
